Darnell K. Barnes, 28, Sentenced for Being Prohibited Person in Possession of Firearm
In Mobile, Alabama, on March 24, 2015, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics unit conducted an investigation on Darnell K. Barnes as it relates to trafficking marijuana. This investigation ultimately led to the discovery of two firearms.
Barnes was previously convicted in Mobile County of Robbery, First Degree, in 2009. By virtue of this felony conviction, Barnes is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
The court found Barnes in possession of a semi-automatic Taurus .40 caliber pistol with one live round in the chamber and the magazine was loaded, as well as an Armalite .223 caliber rifle, which was also loaded with a round in the chamber and the magazine. According to Barnes, he paid $100.00 for one and $300.00 for another from an unknown source.
The Honorable District Court Judge Kristi K. DuBose imposed a 70-month sentence of imprisonment, to be followed by 3 years supervised release. This case was investigated by the Mobile County, Alabama, Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Suntrease Williams-Maynard prosecuted the case.
This case highlights the serious consequences of violating federal firearms laws. As a convicted felon, Barnes was well aware of the dangers of possessing firearms. Unfortunately, his actions led to this severe sentence.
