Felon Caught with Gun Faces Up to 15 Years Behind Bars

Darrell Jawon Wilson, 18, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon in a federal court in Cedar Rapids.

According to evidence presented in a prior court hearing, Wilson was convicted of the crime on October 1, 2025, in Waterloo, Iowa. The incident occurred when officers arrived at a liquor store in response to a report of two masked men looking into cars. One of the men, later identified as Wilson, fled the scene, pulling out a gun from his waistline during the chase. Wilson dropped the gun and was apprehended by the police.

Wilson’s prior felony convictions include conspiracy to commit a forcible felony and going armed with intent. The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that aims to combat illegal immigration, eliminate cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protect communities from violent crime.

The court will schedule sentencing after a presentence report is prepared. Wilson is currently in the custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. He faces a possible maximum sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Devra T. Hake and was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Waterloo Police Department.

Wilson’s case highlights the ongoing efforts to combat gun violence and protect communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. The sentence he faces is a result of his prior felony convictions and the gravity of the crime he committed.
