DAVENPORT, Iowa – David Anthony Tumea, 44, is headed back to federal prison after a cache of child pornography was discovered hidden amongst his belongings. Tumea was sentenced to 87 months behind bars for possession of the illegal material, a particularly sickening offense given he was already on supervised release for a prior felony.
The bust unfolded at a Davenport residential reentry center, where Tumea was serving the tail end of a sentence for possessing an unregistered firearm and ammunition as a felon. Staff discovered four flash drives stashed inside his hat. That seemingly small find spiraled into a full-blown investigation, leading to searches of Tumea’s vehicle and room. The results were disturbing – a total of 27 storage devices and a cell phone were seized, many of which contained horrific images and videos of child sexual abuse.
This wasn’t just a new crime committed *during* supervised release; it was a brazen disregard for the law while authorities were already keeping tabs on him. The court clearly saw it that way. In addition to the 87-month sentence for the child pornography, Tumea’s supervised release from his prior conviction was revoked, and he received an additional 18 months to be served consecutively. There’s no parole in the federal system, meaning Tumea will serve nearly his full term.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa, led by Richard D. Westphal, announced the sentencing. The Scott County Sheriff’s Office played a key role in the investigation, demonstrating the importance of local and federal agencies working together to tackle these heinous crimes. Tumea will also be required to serve a ten-year term of supervised release after completing his prison sentence, a small consolation given the damage he’s inflicted.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the ever-growing problem of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project focuses on identifying, apprehending, and prosecuting predators who use the internet to prey on innocent children. It’s a grim reminder that this filth exists, and the fight to protect vulnerable kids is far from over.
Beyond the prison time, Tumea was ordered to pay $35,000 in restitution. While financial compensation can never truly address the harm caused by such crimes, it’s a step towards accountability. Those with information about child exploitation are urged to contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children or their local law enforcement agency.
