DAVENPORT, Iowa – Jeffrey Alan Guentert, 57, of Iowa City, will spend the next 14 years in federal prison after being sentenced to 168 months (14 years) on September 15, 2025, for Receipt of Child Pornography. The sentence comes after a grim investigation revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse material acquisition and possession.
The 2023 investigation initially flagged an online account linked to Guentert, revealing downloads of files containing horrific child sexual abuse material. Law enforcement didn’t stop there. A comprehensive search of Guentert’s Iowa City residence and his workplace yielded a staggering 87 electronic devices. The fact that this depravity bled into his professional life is particularly sickening.
A forensic examination of the seized devices painted a bleak picture. Investigators discovered Guentert utilized at least 44 of those devices to actively receive, view, and hoard images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children. The sheer volume is appalling: over 5000 images and 1500 videos collected between 2019 and 2023. This wasn’t a momentary lapse; it was a sustained, deliberate act of exploitation.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentencing, emphasizing the gravity of the crime. Guentert won’t be eligible for parole. Upon release from prison, he will face a five-year term of supervised release, and has been ordered to pay $100,000 in restitution – a paltry sum compared to the damage inflicted on the victims.
This case was a collaborative effort between the Johnson County Joint Forensic Analysis Cyber Team and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, highlighting the importance of local and federal cooperation in tackling these heinous crimes. The investigation was conducted under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Project Safe Childhood aims to marshal resources at all levels to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those who prey on children online, and to rescue victims. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dark corners of the internet and the ongoing fight to protect vulnerable children.
