ST. LOUIS – A Romanian national has confessed to a cunning nationwide scheme that saw him fleece Walmart stores out of at least $130,000 through sleight-of-hand tricks.
Suras Rostas, 21, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in St. Louis on Tuesday to two counts of wire fraud. The brazen scam involved Rostas shortchanging cashiers by hundreds or even thousands of dollars at a time, slipping money back into his pocket while returning the merchandise for full refunds.
Rostas traveled the country between April 2023 and October 2024, pulling off at least 45 fraudulent transactions across 18 different states. The defendant’s tactics included counting money into piles that matched the transaction amount before discreetly pocketing bills from the bottom of each pile.
Set to be sentenced on December 11th, Rostas faces up to 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both, for his wire fraud convictions. The defendant is also expected to repay the ill-gotten gains and may face deportation.
The investigation was handled by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Arnold Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Ladendorf is prosecuting the case.
Wire fraud charges carry severe penalties, underscoring the gravity of Rostas’ crimes against Walmart and other unsuspecting victims.
