David Boyer, a 46-year-old man from Nebraska, has pleaded guilty to hacking into several computers at Buena Vista University in Iowa.
Buena Vista University, located in Storm Lake, Iowa, was the target of Boyer’s unauthorized access. From October 2009 through June 4, 2010, Boyer intentionally accessed the computers and email accounts of the President, Vice President, and other employees of the university.
According to a plea agreement, Boyer’s actions were a result of his anger towards the university for not promoting him to the head of the IT department. He was upset that the university had hired another individual for the position instead.
As part of the plea agreement, Boyer has agreed to pay $100,000 in restitution and sign a written apology to the university. He also faces a possible term of imprisonment of not more than 1 year, a $10,000 fine, a $25 special assessment, and at least 1 year of supervised release following any imprisonment.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Timothy T. Duax and was investigated by the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations.
Sentencing for Boyer will be set after a presentence report is prepared. He remains free on bond pending sentencing.
