Sandra Lagos Neda, Illegal Re-Entry, Iowa 2015

A 51-year-old Honduran woman has been sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison for re-entering the United States illegally, announced Acting United States Attorney Kevin E. VanderSchel.

Sandra Lagos Neda, of Honduras, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Stephanie M. Rose on December 4, 2015, after pleading guilty to the charge of illegal re-entry into the United States.

The illegal re-entry charge carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Lagos Neda was also ordered to pay $100 towards the Crime Victims Fund.

The case was investigated by the United States Department of Homeland Security-Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Enforcement and Removal Operations, and the case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

After serving her sentence, Lagos Neda will be turned over to immigration authorities for deportation proceedings.

The Southern District of Iowa has seen a number of immigration-related cases in recent years, with many involving individuals who have re-entered the country after being previously deported.

In a statement, Acting United States Attorney Kevin E. VanderSchel said, ‘This case highlights the importance of enforcing our immigration laws and holding individuals accountable for their actions.’
