Nebraska Man Guilty of Computer Hacking Spree
A 46-year-old Nebraska man, David Boyer, has been convicted of a shocking computer hacking spree at Buena Vista University. The university, located in Iowa, was the target of Boyer’s unauthorized access, which lasted from October 2009 to June 4, 2010.
The motive behind Boyer’s malicious actions was reportedly a personal grievance. He had been passed over for the head of the IT department position at the university, and his anger boiled over into a hacking frenzy. During this time, Boyer accessed the computers and email accounts of the President, Vice President, and other employees of the university.
As part of a plea agreement, Boyer has agreed to pay $100,000 in restitution to the university, and has signed a written apology to the institution. He faces a potential sentence of not more than 1 year in prison, a $10,000 fine, a $25 special assessment, and at least 1 year of supervised release following any imprisonment.
Boyer remains free on bond pending sentencing, which will be set after a presentence report is prepared. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Timothy T. Duax, and was investigated by the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of cybercrime. As more and more of our lives move online, the importance of security and protection against hacking and other cyber threats cannot be overstated.
The case is a warning to would-be hackers and cybercriminals: the consequences of your actions can be severe and far-reaching. The public is urged to remain vigilant and take steps to protect themselves against cyber threats.
