Keith McNeil, Conspiracy to Distribute Methamphetamine, Iowa 2019

A Lincoln, Nebraska man has been sentenced to a decade behind bars for his role in a high-volume methamphetamine conspiracy that stretched across state lines into Iowa. Keith McNeil, 34, admitted to trafficking pure meth in quantities exceeding 200 grams over a two-month span in 2019, sealing his fate with a guilty plea and a 120-month federal sentence.

McNeil pleaded guilty on March 20, 2020, to one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, a charge that stemmed from coordinated drug runs between Nebraska and Sioux City, Iowa. According to court records, McNeil orchestrated at least two trips in June 2019—on June 8 and June 12—where he had an associate drive him from Lincoln to Sioux City to obtain meth through a middleman.

The operation unraveled when Sioux City Police, working an unrelated case at the Hard Rock Casino, discovered a vehicle with its lights on and no occupants in the parking lot on June 12, 2019. Inside, officers seized approximately a quarter-pound of methamphetamine. Surveillance footage identified McNeil and others as the prior occupants, and further investigation confirmed his involvement.

At sentencing, prosecutors presented evidence that McNeil wasn’t just a one-time player—he was part of a sustained trafficking network. He admitted to participating in the same drug acquisition scheme just days before the bust, further implicating himself in a broader distribution ring. The sheer volume—200 grams of pure meth—triggered mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines.

On August 20, 2020, U.S. District Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand handed down the 10-year sentence in federal court in Sioux City. McNeil will serve 120 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system, meaning he’ll serve nearly the full term. He remains in U.S. Marshals custody pending transfer to a federal penitentiary.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn S. Wehde and investigated by the Tri-State Drug Task Force, a multi-agency coalition including the DEA, Homeland Security Investigations, Sioux City and South Sioux City Police Departments, Nebraska State Patrol, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, U.S. Marshals Service, and others. Court records are available under case number 19-4046 at the Northern District of Iowa’s electronic filing system.
