David Edward Palo, 49, Erie Oral Surgeon, Indicted for $232,674 Healthcare Fraud
Erie, Pennsylvania – A shocking case of healthcare fraud has come to light in the city of Erie, with the indictment of local oral surgeon David Edward Palo.
According to the indictment, Palo falsely billed numerous tooth extractions as surgical extractions, causing fraudulent bills totaling $232,674 to be submitted to various health insurance companies between January 2008 and June 2014.
The 27-count indictment, presented in federal court, accuses Palo of healthcare fraud and false statements relating to healthcare matters. If convicted, the 49-year-old defendant could face a maximum total sentence of 140 years in prison, a fine of $6,750,000, or both.
The actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant, according to the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
Assistant United States Attorney Christian A. Trabold is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government, while the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation leading to the indictment.
