David S. Engle, Producing Child Pornography, Washington 2012

GRIMY TIMES: David S. Engle, a former family law attorney and youth baseball coach in Kent, Washington, was sentenced to 25 years in prison today for producing child pornography and sexually exploiting children. Engle, 50, of Maple Valley, has been locked up since his arrest in November 2012.

U.S. District Judge James L. Robart rebuked defense claims that the offenses were not violent, stating, ‘Molestation is violence… This is violence, let’s be very clear on that.’ U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan emphasized the heart-wrenching betrayal of trust by Engle, noting that while nothing can undo the damage, the sentence protects the community and sends a strong message.

Engle was investigated following the shutdown of an international movie production company’s website featuring child pornography. Between 2005 and 2011, Engle purchased over 184 items from the site. Law enforcement found more than 500 videos depicting him sexually molesting a young boy under 16 at his home.

Further investigation revealed evidence of Engle’s sexual misconduct with another minor. He is being separately prosecuted by the King County Prosecutor’s Office for these offenses. Prosecutors sought a 30-year sentence, highlighting the trust betrayed and the monstrous nature of Engle’s criminal conduct.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Marci Ellsworth.
