Defendant Embroiled in $4.5 Million Employer Fraud Scheme
A Columbus, Ohio man has been brought to justice for his role in a massive employer fraud scheme, announced United States Attorney Matthew Schneider. David Hudson, 54, pleaded guilty to devising a scheme that defrauded his employer of over $4.5 million.
Schneider was joined in the announcement by Steven D'Antuono, Special Agent in Charge of the Detroit Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Hudson worked for Cummins Bridgeway, LLC and Cummins Inc., two Michigan-based companies operating in New Hudson.
According to the plea agreement, Hudson was employed by Cummins Bridgeway, LLC from approximately 2003 through 2014, until it was acquired by Cummins. Post-acquisition, Hudson was employed by Cummins. He had authority to write checks from profit sharing entities established by the owners of CBL. As part of the scheme, Hudson would direct an employee under his supervision to transfer CBL funds into one or more of the profit sharing entities. He would then write checks from these entities to himself under false pretenses.
The scheme resulted in the fraudulent transfer of over $4.5 million between 2008 and 2017. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Hudson is facing a sentence of 51-63 months. He will be sentenced on April 15 at 3 p.m. before United States District Judge Arthur Tarnow.
This case was investigated by special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Timothy Wyse.
The case highlights the importance of internal controls and oversight in preventing such schemes. It also showcases the dedication of law enforcement agencies in pursuing justice for victims of financial crimes.
