Kalamazoo Urogynecologist Charged with Health Care Fraud and Adulteration of Medical Devices
GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN – In a shocking turn of events, Dr. Roger D. Beyer, a renowned urogynecologist, and his wife, Susan E. Wright, a nurse practitioner, have been charged with health care fraud and adulteration of medical devices in Michigan.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Dr. Beyer, the owner of Women’s Health Care Specialists, P.C. and Urological Solutions of Michigan, PLC, conspired to commit health care fraud by fraudulently billing Medicare for therapy services using more-lucrative and inappropriate diagnostic codes. The alleged scheme involved providing pelvic muscle rehabilitation therapy to elderly female patients with fecal or urinary incontinence in the greater Traverse City, Kalamazoo, and Grand Rapids areas.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office alleges that Dr. Beyer directed his staff to reuse a single-user rectal pressure sensor on multiple patients, which is inconsistent with the device clearance by the Food & Drug Administration and the devices’ instructions for use. This reuse resulted in the adulteration and possible contamination of the devices, posing a risk of infectious disease transmission to patients.
Ms. Wright, Dr. Beyer’s wife, is also charged with misprision of health care fraud and the adulteration of a medical device. The U.S. Attorney’s Office alleges that Ms. Wright knew about the fraudulent billing but failed to inform authorities. She is also accused of adulterating the rectal pressure sensor in the same manner as Dr. Beyer.
Both Dr. Beyer and Ms. Wright have signed plea agreements and are scheduled to appear in court on May 15, 2020. The alleged scheme may have affected hundreds of patients who received therapy services using adulterated medical devices. Potential victims can contact the U.S. Attorney’s Office for information about victim rights and the progression of the case.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office is urging patients who received therapy services from Dr. Beyer’s practices to consult with their treating physicians about undergoing any testing. A press release issued by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services on June 11, 2019, provides more information for patients.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has a dedicated webpage for victims, which includes forms and information related to the case. Potential victims can also contact Kathy Schuette, Victim Witness Coordinator, at (616) 808-2034 for more information.
