DETROIT, Michigan – In a desperate bid to quell the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government has made $850 million available to help public safety agencies respond to the crisis.
The Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding program, authorized by the recent stimulus legislation signed by President Trump, will allow eligible state, local and tribal governments to apply immediately for these critical funds.
Michigan will receive a whopping $24,000,000 in funding to assist states, local units of government, and tribes in preventing, preparing for, and responding to the coronavirus, according to United States Attorney Matthew Schneider.
“Our law enforcement officers are on the front-lines every day, working around the clock to take criminals off the street while at the same time battling an invisible enemy,” Schneider stated. “Our local law enforcement partners are the best in the country, and I’m proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with them to protect the citizens of Michigan.”
The solicitation, posted by the Bureau of Justice Assistance in the Justice Department’s Office of Justice Programs (OJP), will remain open for at least 60 days and be extended as necessary.
Funds may be used to hire personnel, pay overtime costs, cover protective equipment and supplies, address correctional inmates’ medical needs and defray expenses related to the distribution of resources to hard-hit areas, among other activities.
