SPRINGFIELD, IL – David Jackson, 45, is headed to federal prison for a decade after a judge slammed him with a 120-month sentence for dealing heroin and illegally packing heat while doing it. The sentencing, handed down January 24th, concludes a case that began with Jackson’s arrest on June 8, 2022, and a guilty plea entered on July 5, 2023, before U.S. District Judge James E. Shadid.
Federal prosecutors laid out evidence at the sentencing hearing showing Jackson wasn’t just moving drugs – he was actively preparing, packaging, and selling heroin while simultaneously possessing a firearm. The presence of the weapon triggered a mandatory minimum sentence of 60 months, tacked on to the heroin distribution charge. Judge Shadid further designated Jackson a ‘career offender’ based on his prior convictions, ensuring a harsher penalty.
The case was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Springfield Police Department’s Pro-Active Crime Unit. They received crucial support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the U.S. Marshals Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah E. Seberger led the prosecution, building a solid case against Jackson.
Jackson faces not only the ten-year prison stretch but also a three-year term of supervised release upon his eventual release. He’s currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals, where he’s been held since his initial arrest. The statutory maximum penalties for his crimes are steep: up to 20 years for heroin distribution and a $1 million fine. The firearm charge alone carries a mandatory minimum of five years.
This sentencing isn’t being presented as an isolated incident. Law enforcement officials are framing Jackson’s case as part of a broader, concerted effort to tackle gun violence in Sangamon County, Illinois. The initiative involves the Springfield Police Department, the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office, the ATF, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office working in tandem.
The operation is also linked to Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence nationwide. PSN focuses on building trust with communities, supporting local organizations, and strategically targeting enforcement efforts. This case serves as a warning: those who choose to peddle drugs and brandish firearms in Springfield will face the full weight of federal law.
