David James Baber, Felon in Possession of Firearms, Iowa 2022

A Davenport man, David James Baber, 53, has been handed a severe sentence for his involvement in a firearms charge. On March 2, 2022, Baber was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison.

Baber was also sentenced to 24 months for a supervised release revocation, to be served consecutively. This totals a prison sentence of 60 months, with him ordered to serve three years of supervised release following his imprisonment. He was also ordered to pay a $100 Special Assessment to the Crime Victims’ Fund.

The case began when law enforcement attempted to stop a moped that was driving erratically. The officers located the moped, without a driver, in a cornfield. A grey backpack was attached to the moped and contained guns and magazines. The moped had previously been reported stolen.

Later that morning, the officers located Baber in the same cornfield. At the time of the offense, Baber was aware that he had prior felony convictions, which prohibited his possession of firearms.

The United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa made the announcement. The Scott County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa Department of Natural Resources investigated the case.

This case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa. Baber’s knowledge of his prior felony convictions and his involvement in the firearms charge led to his severe sentence.

Baber’s actions were a clear violation of the law, and he will now face the consequences of his actions. The sentence handed down to Baber serves as a reminder of the severity of firearms charges and the importance of adhering to the law.
