Eric Romun Hill, Firearm Offense, Iowa 2023

A Des Moines man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a firearm offense in federal court. Eric Romun Hill, 46, was found guilty of unlawfully possessing a .45 caliber pistol and a stolen 12-gauge shotgun on August 30, 2020. He was ordered to serve a term of supervised release of three years following his prison term.

According to court documents, Hill was a felon and had a history of violent crimes, including two convictions. He was also found to have recklessly discharged firearms in a Des Moines residential neighborhood on the day of the offense. Additionally, Hill removed a GPS monitoring device he was ordered to wear as a condition of parole for a state conviction, remaining at large until he was located and arrested five months later.

The sentence was imposed by United States District Court Senior Judge James E. Gritzner. U.S. Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentencing. The Des Moines Police Department, Iowa Department of Public Safety, Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Fifth Judicial District, Department of Correctional Services assisted in the investigation.

As a result of his actions, Hill was ordered to forfeit any interest in the firearms he possessed. He also paid a $100 special assessment to the Crime Victims’ Fund.
