In a shocking turn of events, a Milwaukee Road switchman was caught red-handed in a brazen heist that left authorities stunned. David I. McGowan, 28, pleaded guilty to stealing and destroying a United States mail bag on April 17, 1923. The crime took place in the Milwaukee Road yards, where McGowan worked. But what’s more astonishing is the brazen way he carried out the theft. McGowan allegedly fired a taxicab, driving to the Viaduct hotel at Gth and Clybourn Streets, where he obtained a knife and slit open the bag.
