A 62-year-old New York City resident has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for possession of an improvised knife in the Terre Haute Federal Correctional Complex.
David Piparo was found in possession of a 6 ½-inch long piece of green plastic with a sharpened point on November 27, 2021. The improvised knife, commonly referred to as a ‘shank,’ is illegal to possess in prison and poses a significant risk to the safety of fellow inmates and correctional staff.

He has been serving his prison sentence at the Terre Haute Federal Correctional Complex since 2021. The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Court Judge James R. Sweeney.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys James M. Warden and Jayson W. McGrath prosecuted this case, with U.S. Attorney Myers thanking them for their efforts.
The Bureau of Prisons investigated this case.
Piparo’s sentence brings the total amount of time he will serve in prison to 22 years and 27 months, making him eligible for release in approximately 2024.
