David Tran, 32, of New Orleans, Louisiana, has admitted to running a sprawling drug operation that pumped deadly fentanyl, methamphetamine, and heroin onto the streets while cultivating hundreds of pounds of marijuana in a warehouse rigged like a narcotics factory. Tran pleaded guilty today before U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo to conspiring to manufacture, possess, and distribute massive quantities of controlled substances, including 400 grams or more of fentanyl, 500 grams or more of methamphetamine, 100 grams or more of heroin, and 1,000 or more marijuana plants.
The case, prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana, stems from a months-long Title III wiretap investigation led by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Wire intercepts captured Tran and his co-conspirators negotiating heroin sales and detailing the construction of a high-output indoor marijuana grow in Bridge City—an operation built with industrial-grade lighting, ventilation, and cooling systems worth tens of thousands of dollars. The infrastructure was designed not just to sustain 700 plants, but to scale into the thousands.
When DEA agents raided the warehouse and adjacent residence, they found the grow operation in full swing—plants at various stages of growth, sophisticated control systems, and a safe packed with a pharmacopeia of illicit drugs. Inside: 1,396.2 grams of methamphetamine, 990 grams of MDMA (ecstasy), and a lethal 1,175.9 grams of fentanyl. That amount of fentanyl—capable of killing thousands—highlights the extreme danger posed by Tran’s enterprise amid a national opioid crisis fueled by synthetic drugs.
Tran’s operation wasn’t hidden in shadows—it was engineered for maximum output and distribution. He admitted to possessing large quantities of fentanyl and methamphetamine with intent to distribute, along with manufacturing vast amounts of marijuana. The setup reeked of long-term planning: wiring, HVAC modifications, and bulk procurement of equipment pointed to a criminal enterprise, not a backyard grow.
Sentencing is set for July 31, 2019, at 9:00 a.m. Tran now faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison, up to life, a $10,000,000 fine, and no less than five years of supervised release if he ever walks free. The prosecution, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney David Haller, sends a clear signal: large-scale drug operations, especially those involving fentanyl, will be met with the full weight of federal law.
The investigation was a joint effort by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the New Orleans Police Department, with critical support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office, and Kenner Police Department assisted in the high-risk search of the Bridge City compound. Federal authorities say the takedown disrupted a major supply node in the Gulf Coast drug trade.
