LAREDO, Texas – In a stunning turn of events, Cynthia Elizabeth Arellano, 34, the former director of a Laredo daycare center, was handed a 45-month prison sentence for her involvement in a large-scale cocaine trafficking conspiracy. The sentence, announced by U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei, follows Arellano’s guilty plea on August 13, 2024.
The court heard that Arellano used her own home as a stash house for approximately 245 kilograms of cocaine and $428,411 in drug proceeds. Her husband and three-year-old daughter were also living in the residence at the time of the offenses. “Drugs and violence often go together, so the idea of using your home where your three-year-old daughter lives, as a stash house, is incredibly dangerous and irresponsible,” Ganjei commented.
Arellano’s actions were uncovered when Cristian Jareth Flores, who arranged the sale of one kilogram of cocaine for $14,000, delivered the drugs to a local retail establishment. The investigation revealed that Arellano had previously provided cocaine to Juan Antonio Ochoa-Saucedo, who had picked up the drug from her residence.
Search warrants executed at Arellano’s home yielded two money counters and drug ledgers, revealing an extensive operation with hundreds of thousands of dollars in proceeds. At the time of her plea, Arellano admitted that she committed the crime to obtain money.
Flores and Ochoa-Saucedo have also pleaded guilty for their roles in the conspiracy, receiving sentences of 36 and 57 months respectively. Arellano was permitted to remain on bond and surrender to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility at a later date.
The Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF), conducted the operation with assistance from the Laredo Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Leslie Ann Cortez is prosecuting the case.
