Houston Drug Ring Busted: 95 Charged in Border Crackdown

HOUSTON, TX – Ninety-five individuals are facing federal charges in the Southern District of Texas following a week of intense law enforcement action, spearheaded by U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei as part of “Operation Take Back America.” The crackdown, spanning June 27 through July 2, targeted illegal immigration, border security breaches, and a surge in transnational criminal activity, revealing a network of drug trafficking and gang-related offenses plaguing the region.

The bulk of the charges – 62 cases – involve individuals accused of illegally entering the country. Another 26 face the severe penalty of felony reentry after previous deportation, many with extensive criminal histories including narcotics offenses, violent crimes, and prior immigration violations. But the scope extends far beyond simple border crossings. Investigators uncovered a complex web of human smuggling operations, large-scale drug trafficking, and illegal firearms possession, painting a grim picture of criminal enterprises exploiting vulnerabilities along the southern border.

A significant operation targeted Venezuelan nationals in Houston allegedly linked to the Anti-Tren criminal organization – a group known for violence mirroring that of the notorious Tren de Aragua gang. Sixteen foreign nationals are accused of drug trafficking and weapons violations, with allegations including attempted murder, violent assaults, and threats. One suspect is charged with being an alien in possession of ammunition, and several are accused of conspiring to distribute over five kilograms of cocaine. U.S. Attorney Ganjei made it clear: “The Southern District’s twin priorities are securing our border and the eradication of violent crime. This case implicates both.”

Among the individuals charged with illegal reentry, Cesar Alejandro Tovar-Guillen, a convicted felon for cocaine distribution, was apprehended near Alton just months after his removal in March. Osvaldo Aguilar-Aguilar and Jose Alejandro Dominguez-Guzman, both with prior federal convictions for illegal reentry and time served in prison, were discovered having re-entered in October and November 2024, respectively. Juan Esquivel-Garcia, previously sentenced to 75 months for methamphetamine trafficking, also faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted. These aren’t isolated incidents; they represent a revolving door of criminals exploiting lax border enforcement.

The consequences for these violations are mounting. In McAllen, Margarito Llanes received a 52-month federal prison sentence for alien smuggling after leading law enforcement on a dangerous 1.5-mile high-speed chase reaching 70 mph, crashing into a tree and seriously injuring all eight passengers. The court highlighted Llanes’ violent criminal past, including indecency with a child and robbery. Luis Ernesto Hernandez-Doria was sentenced to 51 months, while Jose Angel Lopez-Herrera received 46 months for illegal reentry. Lopez-Herrera’s history includes a human smuggling case where one individual drowned. Hernandez-Doria’s sentence was intended as a deterrent, given his three prior felony convictions for illegal reentry and a conviction for disarming a police officer. His most recent removal was in July 2024.

This multi-agency effort, involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Border Patrol, the Drug Enforcement Administration, FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, signals a renewed commitment to border security and dismantling transnational criminal organizations. “Operation Take Back America means going on the offensive…SDTX is going to be unapologetic in carrying out that mission,” Ganjei stated. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this developing story and expose the underbelly of crime along the southern border.
