Miguel Antonio Esquivel Rodriguez, Methamphetamine Smuggling, Texas 2023

DEL RIO, Texas – In a stunning blow to drug trafficking operations along the Texas-Mexico border, Miguel Antonio Esquivel Rodriguez, 33, was sentenced to 240 months in federal prison for his role in a conspiracy that involved smuggling over 85 pounds of methamphetamine into the United States. The Mexican national faced justice on Friday after being convicted on four counts related to the importation and distribution of the illegal substance.

Esquivel Rodriguez was apprehended by Customs and Border Protection officers at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry on October 19, 2022. During a routine secondary inspection, agents discovered trap doors in his vehicle’s floorboard and a clandestine compartment filled with 83 baggies containing crystal-like substance. A subsequent lab analysis confirmed the substance to be methamphetamine, weighing 39.382 kilograms with a purity of 97%.

Indicted on November 16, 2022, Esquivel Rodriguez was found guilty on all four counts—conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, conspiracy to import methamphetamine, and importation of methamphetamine—in a jury trial held in December 2023. The sentence of 240 months, or 20 years, reflects the severity of his crime.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Warsame Galaydh and Tyler Fleming, who worked tirelessly to bring Esquivel Rodriguez to justice. Homeland Security Investigations played a crucial role in the investigation that led to his arrest and conviction. The sentencing is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at dismantling transnational criminal organizations and protecting communities from the scourge of drug trafficking.

U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas announced the sentence, emphasizing the Department of Justice’s commitment to eradicating illegal immigration and violent crime. Operation Take Back America, which is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, coordinates efforts across various agencies to maximize the department’s resources in the fight against drug trafficking and other criminal activities.

Esquivel Rodriguez’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the relentless effort by law enforcement to protect our borders and communities from the perils of drug smuggling. His conviction and sentencing mark another victory in the ongoing battle against organized crime and the illegal drug trade.
