BEAUMONT, TX – Brian Keith Murphy, 33, is headed to federal prison for 85 months after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Marcia A. Crone on July 9, 2025, stems from a brazen shooting that unfolded in broad daylight and was partially captured on a live stream.
On August 11, 2024, Beaumont Police Department officers were dispatched to a report of shots fired near a gas station on Concord Avenue. Before they even arrived, the department’s “Real-Time-Crime Center” was already watching the incident unfold – live. Monitors witnessed Murphy firing multiple shots in the parking lot, endangering vehicles and bystanders.
A swift response, combining live-stream monitoring with on-scene officers, allowed law enforcement to quickly identify the vehicle Murphy used to flee. The vehicle was stopped, and Murphy was apprehended. A search revealed two firearms inside, one of which matched the weapon used in the shooting. The fact that Murphy was already on federal supervised release for a previous conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm only compounded his legal troubles.
“This case underscores the dangers posed by repeat offenders,” stated Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs. “Federal law is clear: convicted felons are not allowed to possess firearms. Murphy’s blatant disregard for the law and public safety has earned him a significant prison sentence.” The prosecution highlighted Murphy’s prior record as a key factor in securing the 85-month sentence.
This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, working in conjunction with the Beaumont Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell James led the prosecution. The case falls under Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at dismantling criminal organizations and protecting communities from violent crime, streamlining resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing law enforcement and the ongoing efforts to combat gun violence. While Murphy is off the streets, the fight against illegal firearms and repeat offenders continues. Grimy Times will continue to follow this and other federal cases impacting communities across the nation.
