NEW ORLEANS, LA – Dayshawn Brown, 39, of New Orleans, is facing a mountain of federal charges following an indictment unsealed this week, alleging a prolific drug trafficking operation and illegal firearm possession. The ten-count indictment, handed down on October 13th and revealed on October 16th, paints a picture of a man deeply involved in the city’s underworld.
According to the Department of Justice, Brown is accused of distributing fentanyl on multiple occasions, with Counts 1 and 8 carrying a potential sentence of up to 20 years imprisonment and a $1,000,000 fine. He’s also charged with distributing a fentanyl-methamphetamine mixture (Count 2), again facing up to 20 years and a $1,000,000 penalty. The indictment further alleges significant methamphetamine distribution – 50 grams or more (Counts 3 and 5) – which, if convicted, could land him up to 40 years behind bars and a $5,000,000 fine, alongside a mandatory minimum of five years.
But the charges don’t stop at drugs. Brown is also facing three counts (4, 6, and 10) of being a felon in possession of a firearm, each carrying a potential 15-year sentence and a $250,000 fine. Count 7 adds another layer of seriousness, alleging he possessed a firearm while furthering his drug trafficking crimes, potentially adding a mandatory minimum of five years – to be served consecutively – and up to a life sentence. He’s also accused of distributing cocaine hydrochloride (Count 9), with a potential 20-year sentence and $1,000,000 fine.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans emphasized the indictment is merely an accusation, and Brown’s guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Beyond the potential prison time and fines, Brown also faces a $100 mandatory special assessment fee for each of the ten counts. The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the New Orleans Police Department.
This case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering community trust, supporting local organizations, and focusing enforcement efforts. The Department of Justice launched a renewed focus on PSN in 2021, prioritizing strategic enforcement and measurable results.
Assistant United States Attorney Troy Bell of the General Crimes Unit is prosecuting the case. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it moves through the federal court system. Brown remains a presumed innocent until proven guilty, but the sheer volume and severity of the charges suggest a significant threat to public safety has been neutralized – at least temporarily.
