DAYTON – Federal agents have locked up a local man, charging him with attempting to arm the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) with his own hands. Laith Waleed Alebbini, 26, from Dayton, Ohio, is accused of trying to provide personnel, himself included, as material support to the designated foreign terrorist organization.
Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security Dana Boente and U.S. Attorney Benjamin C. Glassman for the Southern District of Ohio joined forces with FBI Special Agent in Charge Angela L. Byers and other JTTF members in announcing the indictment against Alebbini.
April 26 saw Alebbini’s arrest at Cincinnati/Kentucky International Airport, where he was charged via criminal complaint. His bail remains high as he awaits trial.
Supporting a foreign terrorist organization is a serious crime with potential penalties of up to 20 years in federal prison. As per the law, Alebbini is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
The Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) includes multiple local and federal agencies, demonstrating a united front against terrorism. U.S. Attorney Glassman has praised the JTTF’s efforts, along with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Patel, Gerace, and Sher, who are leading the prosecution of Alebbini.
The JTTF’s dedication to combating terror is clear in this case, showing the community that local law enforcement is vigilant in protecting Ohio from radical ideologies.
