COVINGTON, Ky. – In a ruthless crackdown on fentanyl trafficking, Germel Hughes, 45, of Dayton, Ohio, was meted out a 222-month sentence by Chief U.S. District Judge David Bunning this past Friday for conspiracy to distribute and aiding the distribution of fentanyl analogues.
According to court documents, law enforcement’s sting operation on January 2, 2024, resulted in Hughes’ downfall. A confidential informant was used to set up a deal with Earnest Bryson, who was caught with a kilogram of the deadly substance. Accompanied by Julius Cole and Gerald Young, Bryson traveled from Dayton to Fort Wright, Kentucky, to complete the transaction. However, their journey ended abruptly when law enforcement forcibly removed them from their vehicle.
Behind their car, police discovered an attempt to destroy the drugs by mixing them with Coca-Cola. Subsequent testing confirmed the presence of fentanyl and its deadly analogue, fluorofentanyl. The investigation revealed that Hughes had supplied over 100 grams of drugs intended for distribution to the informant. Cole and Young have also faced justice, pleading guilty to drug trafficking charges and receiving sentences of 132 months and 18 months, respectively.
Under federal law, Hughes is required to serve 85 percent of his sentence, followed by a decade of supervision by the U.S. Probation Office upon his release. The joint announcement of the sentence was made by Paul McCaffrey, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky; John Nokes, Special Agent in Charge, ATF, Louisville Field Division; Jim Scott, Special Agent in Charge, DEA, Louisville Field Division; Director Scott Hardcorn, Northern Kentucky Drug Strike Force; and Phillip J. Burnett, Jr., Commissioner of the Kentucky State Police.
The investigation was a collaborative effort by ATF, DEA, Northern Kentucky Drug Strike Force, and KSP. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Winslow is handling the case on behalf of the United States. This sentence serves as a stark reminder of the fight against the opioid epidemic that plagues our nation.
