DAYTON MAN SENTENCED TO 13 YEARS FOR ASSAULTING OFFICER, CONSPIRACY, AND TAX CRIMES
A Dayton man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for a string of high-profile crimes, including assaulting a federal task force officer, conspiracy to distribute marijuana, and tax evasion.
Charles D. Warren, 38, of Dayton, Ohio, was sentenced to 156 months in prison for his role in a conspiracy to distribute marijuana, assault on a federal officer, and tax evasion. Warren was wanted on an outstanding illegal gun possession warrant when Dayton police stopped him for a traffic violation on July 7, 2011.
According to court documents, Warren fled the scene in his car as members of the FBI Safe Streets Task Force approached. He stopped several blocks away, and as a task force officer was beginning to exit his vehicle, Warren put his car in reverse and rammed the officer’s vehicle.
Court documents also state that Warren and others trafficked more than 100 kilograms of marijuana from suppliers in California to the Dayton area between 2009 and 2011. The conspirators used several different methods of laundering approximately $1,100,000 of drug proceeds, including depositing the cash using other people’s names in order to avoid currency reporting requirements.
Warren pleaded guilty on February 23, 2012, and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Timothy S. Black. The investigation was a cooperative effort between the FBI, ATF, IRS, and Dayton police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sheila Lafferty is prosecuting the case.
U.S. Attorney Carter M. Stewart commended the cooperative investigation and the hard work of the local and federal agencies involved. ‘This case is a testament to the excellent work of our law enforcement partners in keeping our community safe,’ Stewart said.
Warren’s sentence serves as a warning to those involved in similar crimes, and a reminder that the law will be enforced to the fullest extent possible.
