Railroad Worker’s $9,517.60 Scam Caught by Feds
PHILADELPHIA – In a shocking case of greed, Wilbert D. McKinzie, a 57-year-old Amtrak employee from Chester, Pennsylvania, was caught submitting false claims for sickness compensation, swindling the United States Railroad Retirement Board out of $9,517.60.
According to the United States Attorney Zane David Memeger, McKinzie was working a second job as a home health aide while submitting claims for sickness compensation. The allegations, announced by Memeger, are a stark reminder of the prevalence of white-collar crimes in our society.
The United States filed a civil fraud lawsuit against McKinzie under the False Claims Act, which allows the government to seek three times the damages plus civil penalties for each false claim. McKinzie has agreed to enter into a consent judgment to resolve the matter.
The investigation, led by the United States Railroad Retirement Board Office of Inspector General, was a result of a probe into McKinzie’s suspicious claims. Assistant United States Attorneys Richard M. Bernstein and Michael S. Macko handled the case.
The allegations against McKinzie are allegations only and not findings of liability. However, the fact remains that McKinzie’s actions were a blatant disregard for the law and a betrayal of the trust placed in him as an Amtrak employee.
The case serves as a reminder that the government will not tolerate such abuses and will take action to protect its interests. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen what other consequences McKinzie may face for his actions.
