BROWNSVILLE, TX – In a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against illegal immigration, 49-year-old Angel Zavaleta-Rodriguez, a man from El Trapiche, Guerrero, Mexico, has pleaded guilty to reentering the United States unlawfully, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Zavaleta-Rodriguez was previously removed from the country in August 2000 and had previously returned illegally. Despite being encountered by authorities on November 13, 2023, and again on March 25 in Harlingen, Texas, he continued to reside in Sebastian, Texas, without proper documentation.
U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei vowed to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions, stating, “We will not tolerate individuals who disregard our laws and put our communities at risk.” Zavaleta-Rodriguez’s actions are a stark example of the dangers posed by those who disregard immigration laws and evade detection.
U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera will preside over Zavaleta-Rodriguez’s sentencing hearing on September 7, where he faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 fine. The defendant will remain in custody pending the hearing.
The investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Enforcement and Removal Operations in conjunction with the Texas Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Coronado is prosecuting the case.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at repelling the invasion of illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime.
