Defendant Sentenced to Prison for Tax Fraud
Mariusz Kalinowski, a 48-year-old man from Woodstock, was sentenced to seven months in prison for tax fraud, followed by one year of supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut.
Kalinowski, the owner of Kalinowski General Construction, Inc., based in Webster, Massachusetts, failed to report $927,828 in income from his business on his personal federal tax returns for the 2010 through 2013 tax years. This resulted in him owing approximately $174,746 in taxes.
On November 29, 2022, Kalinowski pleaded guilty to one count of filing a false tax return. Despite his guilty plea, Kalinowski has since paid the IRS the $174,746 in taxes he owed.
Kalinowski was released on bond and is required to report to prison on June 20. The investigation was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division, with the case being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jennifer R. Laraia and Peter S. Jongbloed.
U.S. District Judge Vanessa L. Bryant also ordered Kalinowski to pay a $16,500 fine. This sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of tax evasion and the importance of honesty in financial reporting.
The case highlights the importance of tax compliance and the efforts of law enforcement agencies to root out tax evasion. It also underscores the need for individuals and businesses to take responsibility for their financial obligations.
