KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Dean Alan Treadway, 69, of Knoxville, Tennessee, stood before a federal judge and admitted to possessing child pornography, sealing his fate in a case that exposes the dark underbelly of online exploitation. On February 28, 2018, Treadway pleaded guilty before Senior U.S. District Judge Leon Jordan, acknowledging his possession of illicit material depicting the sexual abuse of minors.
Sentencing is scheduled for July 23, 2018, at 1:30 p.m. in U.S. District Court in Knoxville. Treadway now faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison, with a maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars. In addition, he could be placed under supervision by U.S. Probation for a period of five years to life, forfeit all electronic devices used in the commission of the crime, and be ordered to pay restitution to the victims—children whose abuse was captured and preserved for predators like Treadway.
The investigation that brought Treadway to justice began with the Knoxville Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC). Following a targeted probe into online child exploitation networks, authorities executed a federal search warrant at Treadway’s residence. Inside, they seized multiple computers and digital storage devices later confirmed to contain graphic images and videos of child pornography—evidence that left no room for denial.
According to court documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, the digital evidence was meticulously analyzed, revealing repeated access to and storage of child sexual abuse material. The precise number of images and videos has not been disclosed, but the nature of the content triggered immediate federal prosecution under child exploitation statutes designed to deliver harsh penalties to those who consume and perpetuate such crimes.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Bart Slabbekorn handled the prosecution, presenting the case as part of Project Safe Childhood—a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the rising tide of child sexual abuse facilitated through the internet. The program integrates federal, state, and local law enforcement to track down predators, dismantle distribution networks, and rescue child victims often hidden in plain sight.
