Dean Paul Stitz, 47, of Matthews, N.C., is going away for more than a decade after being sentenced to 121 months in federal prison for distributing child pornography. The sentence, handed down yesterday by U.S. District Judge Robert J. Conrad, Jr., marks the end of a long-festered case tied to a digital trail of depravity uncovered in 2014.
Stitz admitted guilt in April 2016 to one count of distributing child pornography, a charge stemming from his use of a peer-to-peer network to share illicit material. According to court filings, investigators traced activity from May to July 2014 directly to Stitz’s residence in Matthews. What they found during the execution of a search warrant was a digital archive of horror: a laptop and external hard drive containing more than 600 images and videos of child sexual abuse, including depictions of minors involved in sadistic and masochistic acts.
The FBI’s Charlotte Division led the investigation, seizing the devices and conducting forensic analysis that left no room for doubt. Stitz didn’t just possess the material—he pushed it into the darkest corners of the internet, feeding a network of predators. His actions triggered a federal prosecution spearheaded by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lambert Guinn, who called the evidence ‘overwhelming and deeply disturbing.’
Jill Westmoreland Rose, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, announced the sentencing alongside FBI Special Agent in Charge John A. Strong. ‘This case is a stark reminder that online child exploitation is not a victimless crime,’ Rose said. ‘Every image is a record of a child’s abuse. We pursue these offenders relentlessly.’
Stitz will serve his full sentence without the possibility of parole, a standard for all federal convictions. Upon completion, he will face a lifetime of supervised release and must register as a sex offender in perpetuity. He remains in custody pending transfer to a designated federal prison facility.
The case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, a Justice Department initiative launched in 2006 to combat the online sexual exploitation of minors. By uniting federal, state, and local agencies, the program has helped dismantle networks of abusers and rescue countless victims. For more information, visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov.
