A Chicago teenager’s life was cut short in a tragic act of violence last fall, and now the suspect is facing federal charges.
Deandre Norels Jr., 20, has been charged with the murder of 18-year-old William McGee, who was fatally shot on November 11, 2021, in the Pullman neighborhood of Chicago’s South Side.
According to the indictment, Norels allegedly conspired with another individual to rob McGee, and during the course of the robbery, Norels used a firearm to cause McGee’s death.
Norels is charged with one count of using a firearm to cause a murder, one count of using a firearm during a crime of violence, one count of conspiracy to commit robbery, and one count of robbery.
The charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a maximum of death.
Norels is currently being held in federal custody while awaiting trial, and has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
A status hearing is set for October 28, 2022, at 9:30 a.m. before U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin.
The indictment was announced by John R. Lausch, Jr., United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; Kristen de Tineo, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Division of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives; and David Brown, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michelle Kramer and Margaret Steindorf.
Norels’ current status in the case is that he is being held in federal custody while awaiting trial.
He is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
