Dedham Man Charged in Boston Bank Heists
A brazen series of bank robberies struck the Boston area in January, with one man at the center of the scheme. Joseph Wilcox, 46, of Dedham, was indicted today for robbing three banks, leaving a trail of cash and chaos in his wake.
According to the indictment, Wilcox’s crimes took place over the course of just three days in January. On January 15, he stole $1,318 from the Blue Hills Bank in Brookline. Just a week later, on January 22, he hit the Eastern Bank in Cambridge, making off with $839. Two days after that, on January 25, Wilcox struck again, this time at the TD Bank in Brookline, where he stole a whopping $6,260.
The total amount stolen by Wilcox is a staggering $8,397, a sum that would be a significant blow to any bank. But the impact of these crimes goes far beyond the financial losses. Bank robberies can be traumatic for employees and customers, and can also have a ripple effect on the entire community.
The charges against Wilcox are serious, with a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000. But actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Carlos A. López of Ortiz’s Major Crimes Unit. United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz, Vincent B. Lisi, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Field Division, Brookline Police Chief Daniel C. O’Leary, and Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert C. Haas all made the announcement today.
The indictment is a significant development in the case, and a major step towards bringing Wilcox to justice. But the investigation is ongoing, and it’s likely that more details will emerge in the coming days and weeks.
As the city of Boston continues to rebuild and recover from the trauma of these crimes, one thing is clear: the people responsible will be held accountable. And with the indictment of Joseph Wilcox, one step closer to justice has been taken.
