Stolen Check Cashing Conspiracy Rocks Jefferson County
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A federal jury has delivered a guilty verdict against Deizman Deandre Ellis, 24, of McCalla, Alabama, in a case that exposed a large-scale stolen check cashing scheme. Ellis, a lead participant in the conspiracy, was convicted of all five charges he faced, including conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, possession of stolen mail, and fraudulent use of unauthorized access devices.
According to evidence presented at trial, Ellis and his co-conspirators targeted blue postal boxes in the Tuscaloosa, Alabama area between August 2023 and February 2024. They stole business and personal checks using stolen postal keys, which were then deposited into co-conspirators’ bank accounts and withdrawn as cash. The scheme, which lasted nearly six months, left a trail of financial devastation in its wake.
Co-conspirator Eric Bernard Carter, Jr., 27, of Birmingham, Alabama, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud in March. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigated the case, assisted by the Northport Police Department, Rainbow City Police Department, and Tuscaloosa Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brett A. Janich and William R. McComb are prosecuting the case.
