Shane Christopher Abrams, a 36-year-old man from Deland, Florida, has been indicted for attempting to entice a 13-year-old to produce and send him photos depicting child sexual abuse. The charges were announced by United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg.
According to court documents, Abrams was arrested on May 20, 2024, by FBI agents at his place of employment in South Daytona. The indictment alleges that Abrams engaged in a text conversation with an undercover FBI agent posing as a 13-year-old child on an online social media application. Abrams asked the child questions about her body and discussed masturbation, and even provided her with his cellphone number to continue the conversation.
The investigation revealed that between April 4 and April 20, 2024, Abrams and the undercover agent exchanged numerous text messages, with Abrams sending the agent several explicit photos that he claimed were of himself. On multiple occasions, Abrams asked the child to produce and send him explicit photos of herself, providing her with specific and sexually explicit instructions on how to comply with his request.
This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney D. Rodney Brown is prosecuting the case.
It’s worth noting that an indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Abrams’ actions are being prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project brings together federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
As a result of Abrams’ actions, he faces a minimum mandatory penalty of 15 years, up to 30 years, in federal prison, as well as a potential lifetime of supervised release if convicted.
