WILMINGTON, Del. – Sandra Jackson, a former nurse practitioner in Delaware now living in Florida, has settled a civil lawsuit worth $520,000 for her involvement in health care fraud. The settlement resolves allegations that Jackson violated the False Claims Act by ordering unnecessary genetic testing and medical equipment for Medicare beneficiaries without proper examination or patient relationship.
Between September 2018 and April 2019, Jackson is accused of digitally signing hundreds of orders for such services, which led to Medicare payments totaling nearly $520,000. She did not personally examine the patients nor establish a provider-patient relationship before authorizing the tests and equipment. The orders were reportedly pre-populated by others, and Jackson signed them without delay.
“Health care providers who authorize medically unnecessary testing and equipment waste taxpayer dollars,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Dylan J. Steinberg, indicating the office’s intent to pursue such conduct aggressively. “This office will continue to combat providers whose primary concern is personal profit over patient care.”
Special Agent in Charge Maureen R. Dixon of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (HHS-OIG) echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the commitment to promoting compliance in HHS programs and investigating misconduct.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Claudia L. Pare and Affirmative Civil Enforcement Auditor David Cheung handled the case on behalf of the government. This resolution underscores the government’s emphasis on combating health care fraud, with the False Claims Act serving as a powerful tool in this fight.
