Demarcus McCloud, Bus Arson, IN 2024

INDIANAPOLIS – Demarcus McCloud, 46, of Indianapolis, has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison and three years of supervised release for torching an IndyGo bus and station. The destruction he caused, valued at $1,790,685.23, earned him a restitution order. Court documents reveal the April 24, 2024, blaze that engulfed Bus #1993 was McCloud’s handiwork. He boarded the bus with a jug of liquid and two lighters, leaving a destructive path that led to a passenger’s hospitalization due to smoke inhalation.

McCloud’s prior criminal history is long and violent, including multiple felony convictions for battery, firearm possession, burglary, drug offenses, and intimidation. His actions have now landed him in federal prison following his guilty plea to malicious damage to property receiving federal funds and federal property. The ATF and IMPD worked together to bring McCloud to justice.

United States Attorney Tom Wheeler called McCloud’s actions ‘reckless’ and expressed gratitude for the law enforcement response that held him accountable. ‘Federal dollars are invested in our communities to serve and protect the public,’ said Wheeler, ‘not to be torched by a violent repeat offender.’

Acting Special Agent in Charge John Smerglia of the ATF highlighted the collaborative efforts between federal and local agencies in this case, noting their dedication to justice for victims and the community.

The bus depot and trash can where McCloud set fires were funded by federal grant monies. His sentence sends a strong message about the consequences of targeting public property with violent intent.
