Crime reporter’s notes: Denis Munoz-Rodriguez, a 35-year-old Honduran national, faced the grim reality of federal charges as he pleaded guilty today to illegal entry of a removed alien. This offense, outlined in Title 18, United States Code, Section 1326(a), carries serious consequences.
According to court documents, Munoz-Rodriguez was unceremoniously removed from the United States on January 16, 2003. However, he defied the law once more when he reappeared in the Eastern District of Louisiana on November 3, 2016. His return was unauthorized by the Attorney General of the United States or the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
For his brazen act of illegal re-entry, Munoz-Rodriguez now faces a maximum term of imprisonment of two years, alongside a daunting fine of $250,000. Sentencing has been set for March 22, 2017, by U.S. District Court Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite lauded the efforts of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency in investigating this case. Assistant United States Attorney Jon Maestri is leading the prosecution against Munoz-Rodriguez.
This sentence serves as a stark reminder of the severe penalties for illegal re-entry into the United States, and it underscores the dedication of federal law enforcement to enforcing immigration laws.
