Ex-Bank Teller Convicted of Stealing $700,000 from Coffey County Bank

A federal jury in Kansas has convicted a former bank teller of embezzling approximately $700,000 from a bank in Coffey County.

Denise Christy, 48, of Burlington, Kan., was found guilty of one count of embezzlement, six counts of making false bank entries, six counts of filing false tax returns, and six counts of money laundering.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Christy committed the crimes while working as a retail financial services representative and backup vault teller for the Burlington branch of Central National Bank.

According to the investigation, Christy’s duties included selling cash in the bank’s vault to the Federal Reserve Bank. However, in May 2014, auditors discovered that more than $700,000 was missing from the vault.

Christy falsely claimed that the money was shipped to the Federal Reserve Bank via the Garda security company. An investigation revealed that Christy had falsified bank records to cover up the embezzlement and failed to report the embezzled funds as part of her income.

Christy also used embezzled funds to pay off loans that she and her husband maintained at Farmers State Bank in Aliceville, Kan. The total amount spent on these loans was over $77,000.

Sentencing is set for April 17. The convicted bank teller faces up to 30 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $1 million for embezzlement. She also faces up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million on each of the six counts of making false bank entries.

U.S. Attorney Tom Beall commended the Internal Revenue Service and Assistant U.S. Attorney Rich Hathaway for their work on the case.

Christy’s conviction serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability in the financial industry.

The prosecution’s efforts to bring Christy to justice demonstrate the commitment to upholding the law and protecting the public’s trust in financial institutions.
