Dennis L. Bruno, Federal Program Theft, Pennsylvania 2006

A former Superintendent of Glendale School District in Pennsylvania has been sentenced to five years probation, including 10 months of home detention with electronic monitoring, 500 hours of community service, and $49,600 in restitution on his conviction of federal program theft.

United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced the sentencing of Dr. Dennis L. Bruno, 63, who is now a resident of North Salt Lake, Utah. United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson imposed the sentence on Bruno.

According to information presented to the court, from Oct. 3, 2005, to July 18, 2006, Bruno intentionally misapplied $49,600 of federal funds from the Fund for the Improvement of Education program, a program funded by the United States Department of Education.

Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie L. Haines prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.

Mr. Hickton commended the Pennsylvania Office of the Auditor General Special Investigations Office, the United States Department of Education Office of Inspector General, and the Laurel Highlands Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Bruno.

Bruno’s sentence includes five years of probation, with 10 months of home detention and electronic monitoring, as well as 500 hours of community service. The court also ordered him to pay $49,600 in restitution.

The case is a reminder of the importance of accountability in public office and the consequences of misusing public funds.
