Defendant Sentenced for Counterfeit Cash Scheme in South Dakota

A Timber Lake, South Dakota man has been sentenced for his role in a counterfeit cash scheme. Dennis Tyler Gutierrez, 21, was found guilty of Uttering Counterfeit Obligations of the United States.

The conviction stems from an incident during the Days of 1910 celebration in July 2013, where Gutierrez attempted to purchase beer at the Coop Bar using a counterfeit $100 bill. The owner of the Coop Bar recognized the bill as counterfeit and alerted law enforcement.

Gutierrez was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 21, 2013, and pled guilty on October 1, 2013. The case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Secret Service.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson prosecuted the case. U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentence on December 12, 2013.

Gutierrez was sentenced to one year of probation, a $500 fine, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of attempting to use counterfeit currency. Law enforcement agencies and financial institutions work hard to prevent and investigate these types of crimes.

The defendant’s actions not only put the business at risk but also threatened the integrity of the financial system. This sentence should serve as a warning to those who would attempt to engage in similar activities.
