HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – A six-year prison sentence awaits Derick Russell Legg, 48, for his despicable act of receiving child pornography. The Huntington native was sentenced today to follow this with 15 years of supervised release.
Legg’s downfall began in September 2019 when he utilized peer-to-peer file sharing programs to download files featuring minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. His guilty plea came on January 28, 2020, and by January 30, 2020, Legg had amassed a collection of 668 images and 321 videos of the same nature, stored on an external hard drive.
But the horror didn’t end there; Legg also admitted to having additional child pornography on his cell phone. Many of the materials in his possession involved known victims, prepubescent minors, and instances of sadistic or masochistic conduct.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the sentence, with U.S. Attorney Will Thompson commending the FBI’s work on this case. United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers imposed the term. Assistant United States Attorneys Andrew J. Tessman and Julie M. White prosecuted Legg to his conviction.
This prosecution is part of Project Safe Childhood, a DOJ initiative targeting child sexual exploitation. It is a comprehensive effort that includes federal, state, and local resources to apprehend predators like Legg and rescue their victims.
