MILWAUKEE, WI – Derrick Bethea, a Milwaukee man, will spend the next 21 months behind bars after being sentenced for a brazen credit card fraud scheme stretching across Wisconsin and Michigan. The sentence, handed down following a U.S. Secret Service investigation, closes a case that began with a tip from loss prevention staff at Sam’s Club and Walmart.
Back in April 2014, fraud investigators at both retail giants noticed a pattern of suspicious purchases and contacted law enforcement. A review of surveillance footage quickly zeroed in on Bethea, allegedly using fraudulently obtained credit cards to rack up thousands of dollars in merchandise.
The purchases weren’t small-time. Bethea didn’t limit himself to necessities. Court documents detail a shopping spree that included food, iPads, video gaming systems, clothing, computers, and a range of other electronics. The scale of the fraud suggested a calculated effort to maximize illicit gains.
The U.S. Secret Service took the lead on the investigation, piecing together evidence from multiple stores and jurisdictions.
