DES MOINES, IA – Kenneth Quinton Crosby, 24, of Des Moines, is headed to federal prison after pleading guilty to a scheme to illegally obtain firearms. Crosby was sentenced today to 12 months and 1 day behind bars, followed by three years of supervised release. Don’t bother looking for parole – it doesn’t exist in the federal system.
Court documents reveal Crosby went on a buying spree in 2020 and 2021, picking up at least five firearms. But each purchase was built on a foundation of lies. Crosby knowingly falsified information on ATF Form 4473, the mandatory form required for all firearm transactions. He wasn’t just skipping a box or two; he was deliberately misrepresenting his background, including details about his competency, criminal history, drug use, immigration status, and any history of domestic violence. The system is designed to keep guns out of the wrong hands, and Crosby actively tried to circumvent it.
The jig was up on February 9, 2022, when Crosby was found in possession of four pistols while actively using marijuana – a clear violation of federal law. Being an unlawful user of a controlled substance automatically disqualifies a person from legally possessing firearms. This wasn’t a one-time mistake; it was a pattern of disregard for the law.
“This sentencing should serve as a warning,” said U.S. Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa. “Providing false information to obtain a firearm is a serious crime with potentially devastating consequences. We will continue to aggressively prosecute those who attempt to illegally acquire weapons.”
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) led the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Essley handling the prosecution. The ATF’s work is crucial in tracking these illegal firearm purchases and bringing offenders to justice. They traced the paper trail and built a solid case against Crosby.
This case isn’t just about one man and his bad choices. It’s part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a broader initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence nationwide. PSN brings together federal, state, and local law enforcement, along with community organizations, to address the root causes of crime and make our streets safer. The Department of Justice recently doubled down on PSN, focusing on fostering trust within communities, supporting violence prevention programs, and strategically prioritizing enforcement efforts. Crosby’s actions directly undermine these efforts, and the sentencing sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
