PLANT CITY, FL – A brazen gas station robbery in Plant City landed 26-year-old Deshawn Martin of Orlando a hefty 20-year federal prison sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge William Jung. Martin pleaded guilty in February to the Hobbs Act robbery, but the deal included an admission of guilt in four additional similar crimes targeting businesses across the Orlando area. This wasn’t a smash-and-grab; it was a calculated act of intimidation with a firearm.
The October 15, 2021, incident saw Martin storm into the Plant City gas station, weapon drawn, and terrorize two individuals before snatching cash from the register and directly from one of the victims. He then bolted, aided by his accomplice, 27-year-old Shinel Waldrop, also of Orlando, who was waiting in a getaway vehicle. The entire operation was swift, violent, and left a lasting mark on those present.
Waldrop, having previously copped a plea, received 18 months in federal prison in March 2023 for her role in the scheme. While her sentence is significantly shorter, it underscores the collaborative nature of the crimes. Investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Plant City Police Department worked tirelessly to connect the dots and bring both perpetrators to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Samantha Newman spearheaded the prosecution.
The sentencing is being touted as a win for Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aimed at curbing violent crime. According to the Department of Justice, PSN focuses on building trust with communities, investing in preventative programs, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and tracking results. Whether these programs truly make a difference on the streets remains to be seen, but the feds are eager to highlight any perceived success.
The forfeiture of any assets obtained through the robberies will be handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Nebesky. While a 20-year sentence won’t undo the trauma inflicted on the victims, it sends a message – however hollow it may feel to those living in fear – that armed robbery carries serious consequences. It also highlights the continued prevalence of violent crime in the Orlando area, despite ongoing efforts to combat it.
