Gang Member Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison for Racketeering Conspiracy and Murder
A ruthless gang member who pleaded guilty to a racketeering conspiracy and use of a firearm resulting in death was sentenced to 30 years in prison in a Newport News, Virginia court.
Desmond Finnell, 30, of Newport News, pleaded guilty on November 15, 2016. Finnell was a lieutenant in the notorious Black P-Stones gang headed by Michael Hopson between 2007 and 2010. He was responsible for multiple shootings in Newport News and Hampton as part of his P-Stones gang activity.
On November 28, 2010, Finnell lured Ernest “Critter” Crudup to a location in Newport News where he shot him to death, as he believed Crudup robbed him of between 15 and 20 pounds of marijuana. The brutal murder sent shockwaves through the community.
Finnell’s violent crimes were part of a larger racketeering conspiracy involving the Black P-Stones gang. His sentencing marks a significant victory for law enforcement in their efforts to dismantle the gang.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric M. Hurt and Trial Attorney Marianne Shelvey of the Organized Crime and Gang Section of the U.S. government. U.S. District Judge Arenda Wright Allen presided over the sentencing hearing.
The Black P-Stones gang is a notorious organized crime group that has plagued the Hampton Roads area for years. Finnell’s sentencing serves as a reminder that the U.S. government will not tolerate violent crime and will vigorously prosecute those who engage in it.
Finnell is currently serving his 30-year sentence in a federal prison. His case is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gang violence on communities.
