Huntington, W.Va. – A grim reminder of the drug war’s relentless pace: Jimmy Cheatham, a Detroit native known as ‘Shoe,’ 25, has pleaded guilty to federal heroin charges, announced United States Attorney Carol Casto.
On August 16, 2016, Cheatham was apprehended on an active warrant for conspiracy to distribute heroin. During the arrest, agents with the Huntington FBI Drug Task Force discovered approximately 6 grams of heroin stashed on his person, alongside $1,800 in cash, believed to be from sales.
The investigation into Cheatham began in 2015 and led to his August 16th capture. He confessed to selling over 16 grams of heroin to an informant for $2,000 on August 5, 2015, at 1826 Old 16th Street Road.
Further searches revealed a substantial stash: $6,314 in cash and an AR-15 style firearm in the attic of a Huntington residence linked to Cheatham and two co-conspirators. The task force’s diligence led to these recoveries on July 9, 2015.
Cheatham’s sentence, set for May 1, 2017, could see him serve up to 20 years in federal prison. Assistant United States Attorney R. Gregory McVey is handling the prosecution, with Chief United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers presiding over the plea hearing.
This case underscores the Southern District of West Virginia’s ongoing campaign against prescription drug misuse and heroin trade. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, in collaboration with federal, state, and local law enforcement, is steadfast in its efforts to shut down illegal pill operations, drug markets, and stem the spread of opioids across the region.
