Brooklyn, NY – Dieuverson Caille, also known as “Savage,” is headed to federal prison for 27 years after being convicted of a series of brazen armed carjackings that terrorized the city during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 36-month sentence was enhanced by a consecutive 21-year term handed down by Second Circuit Judge Denny Chin on Wednesday.
Between August 28, 2020, and June 20, 2021, Caille and his crew allegedly targeted four victims, holding them up at gunpoint and stealing their vehicles. The crimes weren’t just thefts; one victim was kidnapped and forced to attempt withdrawing money from an ATM, escaping only by leaping from a moving car, fearing for his life. Another was brutally pistol-whipped during a Canarsie carjacking. Victims also had their iPhones and cash stolen.
Federal prosecutors proved that Caille wasn’t acting alone, but as a member of the notorious Eight Tray Gangster Crip and Haitian Loc gangs. This gang affiliation fueled the violent spree that left residents living in fear. The evidence presented at trial painted a picture of a calculated criminal exploiting the chaos of the pandemic to prey on innocent citizens. U.S. Attorney Breon Peace stated the city is safer with Caille behind bars, and vowed continued prosecution of violent offenders.
The first documented carjacking occurred in Flatbush on August 28, 2020, when Caille and his associates forced a victim into the backseat of his own vehicle and attempted to rob him at an ATM. The September 3, 2020, incident in Canarsie involved a violent assault, with one occupant pistol-whipped during the carjacking of a Chevrolet Malibu. Caille also allegedly acted alone on November 15, 2020, targeting a rideshare driver in Flatbush. The final confirmed carjacking happened on June 20, 2021, in East New York, involving a Porsche.
Acting ATF Special Agent in Charge Bryan DiGirolamo lauded the collaborative effort between the ATF, NYPD, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, highlighting the success of the Strategic Pattern Armed Robbery Technical Apprehension group and the Brooklyn Robbery Squad. “No one should live in fear simply driving down the street,” DiGirolamo said. NYPD Commissioner Edward A. Caban echoed the sentiment, calling Caille a “brazen criminal” who tormented New Yorkers and praising the dedication of investigators.
The 27-year sentence sends a clear message: violent crime will not be tolerated in New York City. While Caille is locked up, the ATF and NYPD vow to continue working together to dismantle violent gangs and remove dangerous criminals from the streets. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to combat violent crime in the city.
